… but Rachael Stirling just laughs it off. Because that's what happens when you rub baps with a trio of lesbians on the BBC. Starring as the Moll Flanders-like Nan Astley in BBC2's Tipping the Velvet earned the 25-year-old actress column inches months before the three-part love story had hit screens. "I'm sick of men asking me what it's like to kiss girls," sighs Rachael, "Or what it's like to wear a dildo. I go: 'Ooh it's liberating! And I bet mine was bigger than yours is.'" Rachael — who's starred in the TV version of Othello, several movies and is the daughter of Diana Rigg — admits she's grown quite fond of her strap-on leather co-star. "It's massive. I'm putting it up in my flat to use as a coat-hanger." In Tipping the Velvet, she sparkles as country girl Nan, who's tempted by the bright lights of the city music halls and sapphically awakened at the first twang of available bloomer. That Nan, unlike most on-screen lesbians, finds her gay skin rather comfy is also something of a TV first. Rachael says she's happy to become a gay icon, on one condition. "I'll be a bit worried if anyone gets fixated. And if I get any pubes in the post I'll send them back." That's a 'look-but-don't-shave' warning, then.
