Charity auction will now be held in 2011

Tipping the Velvet: Episode 2

I thought I'd better post a quick update on the charity auction. It was planned for this month, but due to Rachael's hectic schedule and a few technical issues, this is now looking very unlikely. Luckily, we have an extension until the end of May 2011 to raise the money, so this gives us a bit more time (which is a relief for me as 31st December was quite a tight deadline).

Unfortunately, eBay are refusing to list one of the items — you can guess which one! — which makes things a lot more difficult for me. Obviously, eBay would be the very best place for the auction, but we're going to have to do something a bit more creative with it and try to run the auction directly from the website. I have zero experience with this and it's going to be a lot more work than it would be just posting on eBay, so the extra time will be beneficial.

We are now looking at early 2011 for the auction, however when we have a more definite date, I will update the website with the relevant details. We are still discussing exactly which items will be included in the auction, but the definite items are the gold painted toy and the Nan King door nameplate. There may be additional items relating to An Ideal Husband, but watch this space for more information.

If you want to be one of the first to know when we have more information, make sure you sign up to our announcements mailing list on the Charity Auction page.

Cheap show tickets include £10 opera for the first time

Opera tickets for as little as £10 will be included for the first time in the annual Get Into London Theatre promotion.

The £10 offer applies to La Bohème at Soho Theatre, while tickets to English National Opera's Lucrezia Borgia will be available from £25 during the Society of London Theatre event.

More than 50 shows will be offering reduced-rate tickets in the first weeks of the new year, including Wicked; the West End transfer of the Royal Court's Clybourne Park; an extended run of Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband with Samantha Bond and Rachael Stirling, and new productions such as Million Dollar Quartet.

A look behind the scenes is also offered on many shows. The team behind The 39 Steps will reveal how they stage a chase on the Flying Scotsman, while fans of We Will Rock You can join a singing workshop with the cast.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: "Get into London Theatre is a fabulous opportunity to discover why our theatre industry is the envy of the world."

Rachael Stirling said: "We have an exceptional standard of theatre in London and it's a source of national pride. But it's not unfair to say that a night in the West End is sometimes prohibitively expensive, especially in these dour times."

Heading for the Vaudeville Theatre as other workers are going home is "a different kind of nine-to-five, a whole world that exists largely between 6pm and 11pm", she added. "I feel like I'm walking on air. It's my witching hour."
